How I've grown and changed through BMGT289B:
The first thing I ever heard about BSE was "there is a 60-paged paper, get out while you can." The PCR was an extremely daunting thing to think about, a compilation of everything you've learned over the semester plus creative presentation. Talk about a ticking stress bomb in the back of my mind for the past couple weeks. When I sat down to start my PCR I started slow and steady, what notes did I have (so many notes), what were the most influential topics to me (Startup of You), and how did all of this change who I am and what I do?
BMGT289B definitely left its mark on me. I was suddenly able to see some of my favorite brands through new eyes and conceptualize the business world in regards to Innovation. Steve Jobs went from a movie to a role model and strangers went from murderers in the dark to outlets of inspiration . I am now able to see the strategies of innovators and the disruptive innovations around me (tears blindfold from face dramatically).
I feel like although I was already in the business world through my internship at Cava during my senior year (and now) and my job as a social media specialist at a camp over the Summer I was really ignorant to what innovation truly was. I always made the terrifying association between innovation and brand new, making the topic seem unattainable. After listening to guest speakers like Marty and applying frameworks like Innovator's DNA I can more comfortably say that innovation can come from exisiting ideas, making it reachable to the average person. It doesn't take a genius, it just takes the right mindset.
Through BMGT289B I've been able to create that mindset of innovation and see what components create success. Through learning about Steve Jobs and Elon Musk I started to apply their conviction and design thinking to my work and through IDEO I've started making more of an effort to include empathy into everything I do.
This class changed me because I am more aware about the companies that surround me. The business world is constantly evolving, and it's my responsibility to keep up, but BMGT289B has given me a platform to start from. I am a more equipped business student, intern, scholar, and now, innovator.
Being an innovator doesn't equate being rich, famous, and relaxed. It's about being invested and collaborating. It's embracing risk and uncertainty. Breaking into new markets. Failing. Getting up and going again. Thinking like the consumer. Being the consumer. Challenging the norms. Taking things apart. Putting them back together. Observing. Obsessing. Designing. But most of all, it's about learning. Because the minute you think you know it all is the minute you fall behind.
This class has inspired me to bring these principles to my internship and my school life, allowing me to produce better work and work I'm most proud of. This PCR represents how I've implanted the innovator mentality into my own mindset and how I will never be able to look at a Tesla the same way again.
